Alfonso then heads to Veracruz, Mexico, getting another job at a bar and meets a new girlfriend. After he was released, he left the country by heading to Belize through the jungle and was stopped by an immigration officer. While heading to Livingston, Guatemala, he was jailed for nine months after not having any ID or passport. Alfonso was caught doing drugs on the job and was fired by his boss, of whom he promptly stabbed. He decides to leave for Guatemala City, getting a job in hotel security. FBI and Mexican authorities were sent to the restaurant to arrest Alfonso, but he left before they arrived. Missing his family, he calls his sister, who promptly informed police of his location. He took a bus to El Paso, Texas where he then headed to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, finding a job as a bartender. Knowing police were after him, Alfonso left town and headed to Miami. One day, Alfonso waited for her in the parking lot from where Velasquez worked, and approached her and shot her. Nine years later, he began dating another woman named Genoveva Velasquez.
During the visit, while Alfonso is driving with Yang on passenger side seat, he shot her in the head. In 1992 in Wheaton, Illinois, Michael Alfonso's girlfriend Sumanear Yang attempted to break up with him and Alfonso talks her into seeing her for one last time. He is returned to the United States, where he receives a 26-year prison sentence in a guilty plea. Initially, Karla receives money transfers from McGuffey's parents to avert suspicion, but one day, McGuffey himself goes to pick up the cash, and he is apprehended by Mexican immigration authorities for overstaying his visa. One day, he meets a woman named Karla, who he marries. Once in Mexico, he tries living in several places, all with various complications, which scare him to go elsewhere in the country. From there, he obtains $10,000 cash from his parents and a fake birth certificate from his brother in a new name, and he uses the birth certificate to obtain a state ID card from Oklahoma, which he uses to fly to Mexico City. He then flees the state, first by purchasing a bus ticket from Seattle to Los Angeles, then by departing another bus early in Portland, repeating this pattern until he reaches the hometown of his parents in Texas. The series has repeated on Discovery Channel and American Heroes Channel (AHC). Other outdoor scenes were filmed in northern New Jersey. Many outdoor scenes in this series are filmed at the company's studio on Treasure Island in San Francisco, in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Most scenes were not filmed in areas that the stories took place. The series was created by executive producer David M. Many others found a way to build a new life without committing new crimes and successfully remain in hiding for years. While on the run, some of the fugitives do anything from robbing gas stations to stealing Crystal Gayle's tour bus. Sometimes they are on the run as little as a few weeks before being caught while other times they remain on the run for years and in a few cases even decades. Many of these people escaped from prisons after being sentenced while others escaped jails they were being held in while awaiting trial.
The series profiles true stories of people who have committed crimes, and have avoided arrest or capture, but ultimately end up being caught. I (Almost) Got Away with It is an American documentary television series on Investigation Discovery, debuting on January 12, 2010.
